Approx. 10.00 p.m.: When investigator Steve Chew first arrived at the
building, he was standing at the very rear portion of the Main Bar Area
when he believes he caught a very fleeting glimpse of a figure walking
between the two snooker tables.
10.30 p.m. onward: Prior to beginning the investigation, a member of
Club staff, Carol Hickeebottom, kindly gave the group a guided tour of
the property, including the yard at the rear of the premises and an
out-building. (The latter was mentioned as being of potential paranormal
significance, but, due to the cold weather, it was deemed unsuitable for
inclusion in our investigation).
Immediately upon re-entering the Club, Sarah Didsbury reported seeing a
figure situated on the purple seating situated at the High Street end of
the building. Although she only saw the figure fleetingly, she was able
to describe it as being a slimly built male, wearing a smart, black
suit. He appeared to have brown hair, slicked back to his head, with
tinges of grey. He cross legged, with the calf of one leg on top of his
other knee.
Sarah immediately approached Carol and told her what she had seen. She
was duly told that this figure had been seen in this position many times
and was allegedly the ghost of Michael Arthur Bass. Sarah was shown a
portrait of the gentleman – situated on the wall of the Main Bar Area,
next to the gaming machines – which she identified as the figure she had
seen.
During the pre-investigation period, members of the group are invited to
walk up and down the Main Staircase in an endeavour to experience ‘cold
spots’ associated with this part of the building. Some present say that
they can definitely feel these spots, while other feel nothing. During
this period, Sarah Didsbury mentions that she gets the impression of
some form of ‘female presence’ which appears to be looking over the
stair banisters. She is told by Carol that this is something which is
frequently detected.
Approx. 10.45 p.m. – Carol Hickeebottom and male companion leave premises.
Vigil One: 11.50 p.m. – 12.30 a.m.
Group One - Frazer Smith, Len Jackson, John Conway and Julie Badger -
situated on First Floor Landing area of Main Staircase.
During this session:
John and Julie – seated on Main Staircase Landing – report experiencing
a cold draft periodically passing by their position.
Frazer reports a feeling of someone (male) sitting at top of Staircase
looking back down the stairs.
Group Two – Nick Duffy, Steve Chew, Sarah Didsbury and Kev Wallace –
situated at High Street end of Main Bar Area.
During this session:
Video camera situated on small table at right of Lobby door – facing
towards the rear fireplace – for duration of vigil.
12.01 a.m. – mobile phone apparently belonging to Club staff members
briefly goes off behind Bar.
12.18 a.m. – Sarah and Steve report a drop in temperature, but Myself
and Kev feel nothing. (A check of the nearby thermometer reveals the
same temperature as previously noted during the stay).
12.30 a.m. – Sarah, in the process of walking anti-clockwise around the
snooker table nearest the front of the property, feels something ‘touch
her hair’ as she passes the corner of the table nearest the Lobby door.
(Considerable ‘shock’ response, making myself – situated at the opposite
end of the table – jump too!) Sarah reports that the feeling didn’t seem
nasty / antagonistic in any way, but just a light touch. (*Checked
ceiling above at this point, but found nothing to account for the
sensation). The above incident occurred in view of the active
(recording) video camera.
Immediately following Vigil One, the two groups meet in Main Bar Area
for break.
During this period:
I go upstairs (alone) to generally take pictures of the premises. On two
occasions, I press the button of my camera and find that it doesn’t take
a photograph. Upon pressing the button a second time – the shot is taken
as usual. The first occasion was on the First Floor Landing of the Main
Staircase and then in Card Room 1. In two years of using this particular
camera, this has never happened previously.
Also: John Conway, in the process of walking around the snooker table at
the High Street end of the room, reports feeling something ‘touch his
head’ on three occasions in the same position. Reaching a point on the
opposite side of the table to that which featured in Sarah’s experience
(immediately in front of the Disraeli bust on the mantel), he felt
something touch the top of his head. Immediately stopping, he retraced
his step and felt it happen again. Stopping again, he stepped forward
and apparently felt the same thing happen again. John comments on
situation, saying it was as if a piece of string had been dangling from
the ceiling, with the very tip of it touching his head. (*Again, nothing
physical can be found to account for the sensation).
Vigil Two: 1.10 am to 1.50 a.m.
Group One - Frazer Smith, Len Jackson, John Conway and Julie Badger –
situated in Main Bar Area.
Group Two - Nick Duffy, Steve Chew, Sarah Didsbury and Kev Wallace –
situated in general First Floor Landing area. (Incl. Cards Rooms 1 and 2).
During this period:
Video camera - recording in night-shot capacity – situated on serving
hatch counter between small, First Floor Kitchen and Dance Studio.
(Filming into Dance Studio).
1.15 a.m. – entire group situated in Card Room 1 hear (what sounds like)
an abrupt, noise sound like someone clearing their throat(?!) Personally
speaking, I believe that the sound seemed ‘female’ in origin. (Of
relatively high pitch).
Later, upon seating themselves at the top of the Main Staircase, Steve
and Sarah report feeling of cold passing over them sporadically. (As
previously noted by John and Julie).
Vigil Three: 2.50 a.m. – 3.20 a.m.
Group One – Frazer Smith, Nick Duffy, John Conway and Julie Badger –
situated on general First Floor Landing area.
Group Two – Len Jackson, Steve Chew, Sarah Didsbury and Kev Wallace –
situated on Cellar to 2^nd Floor Flat Staircase. (Group move from
Staircase to Cellar Area briefly during vigil).
Vigil Four: 3.40 a.m. – 4.20 a.m.
‘Baiting’ Sessions carried out in two locations: Main Stair Case and
small, First Floor Kitchen area.
Main Stair Case: Group present - Frazer Smith, Nick Duffy, Len Jackson,
Steve Chew, Sarah Didsbury and Kev Wallace. (John Conway and Julie
Badger situated in Main Bar Area).
During this period:
Questions levelled directly at the room – ‘baiting’ procedure -
apparently elicited no response whatsoever.
3.54 a.m. - Kev – seated on First Floor Landing, immediately outside and
facing the Dance Studio door – reports hearing a sound like ‘three
steps’ from a position in front / right to his own and then, later, a
brief ‘hiss’ type noise. (From approximately same position). These
possible noises did not come - in any way, shape, or form - as a
consequence of the questions being asked by group members.
First Floor Kitchen: Group present - Frazer Smith, Len Jackson, Steve
Chew, Sarah Didsbury and Kev Wallace. (Myself, John Conway and Julie
Badger situated in Main Bar Area).
During this period:
‘Baiting’ session purposefully aimed by group into Dance Studio area.
Kev reports seeing a small light move across the rear wall of the Studio
from top right of wall to top left. (No light sources present to account
for this effect).
A noise akin to footsteps heard on at least three occasions, seemingly
originating inside the empty Studio, or possibly the Main Corridor which
runs the breadth of the First Floor, past the Card Rooms, etc.
While situated inside the kitchen – door closed – a ‘movement’ sound was
heard from outside in the First Floor Corridor. Nothing could be found
to account for the noise.
Group leave property approx. 4.45 a.m. – 5.00 a.m.
_ [III]. Secondary Notes: Audio / Visual Results._
_ _
Of the video recordings made during the night, none appear to have
caught any ‘visual’ activity that might be regarded as paranormal in
nature.
Some of the recordings contained potentially anomalous sounds – knocks,
taps, clicks, etc – but due to the considerable amount of audio
pollution from around the (outside of the) building, it would be
impossible to differentiate between sounds occurring inside the property
and those originating externally.
The land that this building stands on 400 hundred years ago was alms houses and in more recent times in the 19th Century it was the towns post office. In 1905 it became the Constitutional Club refurbished by Baron Burton and other wealthy brewers to its splendour of today. A building that you literally walk back 100 years in time with all the original Victorian features you could be on a set of a hammer house of horror!
The footage was taken around 15 after the camcorder had been locked off in the top floor flat, where supposedly a man had committed suicide.
This light is by no means conclusively paranormal, and in my opinion is most likely to be an insect of some kind. It is clearly too big to be a dust or fibre particle, while the room had also had time to settle down after we had left. Of most interest is the fact that the light dissipates as it enters the centre of the frame, where the infra red beam is at its strongest. Could it be that the beam is too strong, and the object simply looks as if it disappears?
